They ended up as they are because they made a deal with crazy zealots. You let religious fanatics bleed you and experiment on you with all their spells and see what happens to you. Anyone with half a brain would know that's not a smart move.

Things were different back then, Squalo. There was a hierarchy. I will admit they were only entertainment for my children and I for various reasons, but things changed. Things would have changed for them as well, if they hadn't been so impatient. I can respect greed, but you have to know which side will benefit you most.
